The Emergence of Social App TikTok

TikTok, the Chinese social media platform which allows users to create and share short video clips, is becoming a huge competitor to Snapchat and even Twitter.

Videos created on TikTok are generally no longer than 15 seconds – although it has experimented recently with longer clips and some star users are allowed to make videos of up to 59 seconds. Adverts have also recently been spotted on the site as it looks for ways to monetise its content.

The app has drawn comparisons to Vine, the once popular video app that was owned and shut down by Twitter.

Facebook Data Scandal: What Now?

facebook on mobileOnce again the biggest social media network, Facebook, are in the spotlight- for all the wrong reasons. The drama began when the $500 billion company admitted Friday that data analysis firm Cambridge Analytica, which has close ties to President Trump’s election campaign and right-leaning megadonors, used data that had been collected from 50 million users without their consent. Facebook has since suspended Cambridge Analytica’s access to its platform.

Cambridge Analytica issued a number of press releases in the days following the explosive media reports, saying that it “strongly denies the claims” it acted improperly.

Instagram May have 1-up Over Snapchat

Instagram stole Snapchat’s story feature, old news… Well, now they may have 1-up on the original disappearing instant messaging platform.

Instagram is now offering even more photo and video messaging options to 200+ million Story users. It’s called Direct. Direct, launched last November, has been Instagram’s name for its disappearing messages. Now, Instagram is plugging its disappearing photo and video messaging within its Stories feature.

Bonfire- Facebook’s group chat app?

There is a new player in town, Houseparty- a group chat app popular with teenagers. Houseparty, built by founder Ben Rubin and his team last year, was designed for teens who want to dip in and out of live online gatherings. It notifies you if your friends are online and hanging out online and invites you so you can go and join them at these digital “parties”. By November 2016, almost 1.2 million users spent round 20 minutes a day using the app. Currently, Houseparty is in the US App Store’s top 200 app, sitting at 152, and 14 in the social network category (App Annie,2017).
