The Emergence of Social App TikTok

TikTok, the Chinese social media platform which allows users to create and share short video clips, is becoming a huge competitor to Snapchat and even Twitter.

Videos created on TikTok are generally no longer than 15 seconds – although it has experimented recently with longer clips and some star users are allowed to make videos of up to 59 seconds. Adverts have also recently been spotted on the site as it looks for ways to monetise its content.

The app has drawn comparisons to Vine, the once popular video app that was owned and shut down by Twitter.

TikTok emerged in 2016 when Bytedance, now the world’s largest internet start-up valued at $75bn, launched Douyin which was later rebranded as TikTok for international markets. After acquiring for $1bn in 2017, TikTok grew to 100 million users in the space of a single year, with a billion views daily.

Since the company was established in 2016, it is now available in 15 countries and in 75 languages.

TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide on App Store in Q1 2018[1]. Outside China, in Japan and Thailand, it has reached #1 in free app category.

Research firm App Annie reported that TikTok’s ranking in 2018 was No. 4 worldwide in downloads across iOS and Google Play.

Fast-forward to the present and TikTok has a reported 500 million monthly active users across the globe, compared with Twitter’s 326 million.

40% of these half a billion active users are outside China.

Statista chart (based on Priori Data insights) also shows that the TikTok app is predominant in India, where it boasts 119.3 million downloads. Other countries such as the USA, Turkey, and Russia are also racking up on the app, boosting its popularity.

Based on survey[2], 82.3% of users indicated they go the the app to see funny videos. The following categories are talent (56.0%) and daily life (54.1%).
